More photos

I have took even more photos , however, i will only consider a couple of these to be on the main cover, the reason for this is because they don't fit in with the genre. i feel i need to take more versatile photo's before i can pick my final image. i also need to take a few photos for my contents page and double page spread.

Photographs

As you can see i have have took some photos for my main image on the front cover. These photographs are unedited so i will experiment with them to create a edge so they will fit with my genre. However, i will need to take more photographs before i can choose the mock up image.

Masthead ideas

I have made three mastheads , they are all different styles for "Unplugged". They have different effects , however i will experiment with all of them when i make the mock up of the front cover.

Magazine Draft

Front cover:

This gave me an idea of layout and spacing in for my front cover of my magazine.

Contents :

This also gave me an idea of spacing and layout, it showed me how much i could fit on the page.

Double page spread:

This showed me how much i could fit on the double page, it also gave me an idea of the layout i could use.

They are not detailed because i wanted to see how much i could fit on each page, it gave me an idea of spacement and layout for my mock up.

Masthead name ideas

I have decided that my magazine will be a indie magazine. This means i will have to create a name which will relate to the target audience.

My first idea was "Wired" , i felt that the name fitted with the genre well and it could associate with the type of music inside the magazine. However, a draw back from this is that people thought it sounded like a dance magazine and another magazine had a similar name. My next idea was "Unplugged", it got a great response of people and it sounded and fitted in with the genre perfectly.

Double page Article

I have been looking at the different types of double page spread that are featured in music magazines. After analysis some of the articles I have come up with some articles that come up in every magazine. These articles are:

Artist Feature
Artist interviews
Questions and answers
Song and Album Reviews
Live Music reviews
Adverts
Non music reviews

I have decided that my genre will be an indie magazine like NME; the reason for this is because I enjoy the music and the most people liked it from my primary research (questionnaire).

I haven’t finalised the article that I am going to use for my article but I have decided that I will choose from Artist feature, Q&A and Artist interview as I feel they will be most successful.

Questionnaire Results

How much would you pay for a music magazine?

15% said £1.00 - £2.00
30% said £2.00 - £3.00
45% said £3.00 - £4.00
10% said £4.00 - £5.00

Most people would be happy to pay around £3.00; I can conclude they would consider any think higher than £4.00 to be too expensive. From these results I would price my magazine at £2.50 to £3.50.

What type of music do you listen to?

15% said Rock
45% said indie
15% said RnB
20% said Pop
  5% said Dance

The most common type of music was indie, I will consider to create an indie magazine because it is of the biggest audience

How often would you buy a music magazine?
25% said weekly
20% said Fortnightly
50% said monthly
5% said annually

The majority of people would like to buy a magazine every month; this means that my biggest audience would be producing a magazine every month.

What type of articles would you like to see in a magazine?
15% said reviews
10% said music news
40% said Artist feature
30% said interviews
5% said fact file
0% said adverts

I can be versatile with the articles in my magazine because I can use more than one of them. However, the most common was an artist feature and an interview , I will consider in using either of these for my main articles

Front Cover Task

For this magazine, i have chosen the Q mast head and encorporated it into a magazine which i have made.

I have used the Q mast head and placed it conventionally at the top third of the front cover, this is because of the house style of Q magazine.I have also kept the same font style and colour which adds to the house style of the magazine. The main headline of the magazine is Candice payne , i used the models name so people will recognise who she is. She is a up and coming artist which means not every one will recognise her . At the bottom of the page i used "Win" tickets to entice the reader and make them interested in the magazine.  I edited the main image to make it formal so the artist will not be taken as a joke. I also made the image black and white so the red house style will stand out . Q magazines always have a list of famous artists they interview and have exclusives on , so i decided to use "PLUS" to entice the reader and show the main articles of the magazine. The magazine always have the a list celebrities on the magazine so i done this by putting famous bands in the articles and subtitles . Lastly i put the date and a bar code which is a convention of all magazines .

Rock Sound double page spread

The rock sound double page spread is similar to the kerrang and Nme .  It has a famous person convetionally to relate to the text box, also there is usual illuatrations which is another  convention of magazine .It also conclude quotes which present the reader with background information , which entices them to continue reading.

Rock Sound cover .

Firstly the mast head is conventional which is placed in the top third of page, also, the mask head is covered by the artist . This is a convention which is usual found in well known magazine, therefore rock sound believes that there target audience will aready know about there magazine. rock sound has also used a well known band to promote the magazine . The main cover line use a triple which is a language device which would appeal to there audience . " The past. The present. The future." is there cover line as it will appeals to there articles inside .The use of subtitles are also conventional on the side of the magazine which shows the content of the magazine . Superlative words aswell as personal pronouns to engage the audience.

Q double page spread

Q double page spread is very simple which has a good combination of images and text , i think that this style would work best for my magazine as it is very simple , not to much goining on , fits in with the magazine and has a theme . They use a well known band as the back ground and put the text on the second page , this lets the reader understand the situation and can relate the text to the image .

Q Contents

Q contents page is very different to Kerrang because it is very simple , there is a famous singer in the background promoting contents and there is a list of pages with a brief description , in my magazine i would like to use these conventions because i think that they work well, they are simple ,easy to read  and do the purpose of a contents page .

Q cover

The Q magazine is also well known, the magazine is very conventional with the mast head , language devices and subtitles .Firstly the mast head is covered by the image in the background, this suggest that the magazine is well known and people would already know the name of the magazine . Also a famous singer is on the forground, this i similar to many magazines who get famous people to promote the magazine. However the subtitles are minimal with not much information about the contents. It just lists names famous people which is very uncoventional. The magazine does not use many superlatives and personal pronouns which are also very unconventional. In my magazine i will be looking to use a famous person in the background to promote the magazine as it is the most common convention .

NME Double Page Spread

Similar to "kerrang" double page spread , it focuses on one band and explains there recent activity , This also  has a colour scheme of the border and important paragraphs , the colour scheme is blue and is something that i might add into my magazine. In this this double page spread it also has a balance of of text and images . They also have a well known band as there double page spread , which is similar to kerrang. However there are some differences as it seems that it has a border of text which is not related to the main image and focuses on other bands , this is unconventional for a magazine .

NME Contents

This contents page is a conventional contents page , as it links and gives a brief discription of the pages in the magazine , how ever nme focus on the promotions that they are offering e.g. "£2 pound off" , "NME TV" and "Club Nme" this is not conventional of a contents page .

Nme Cover

The NME is similar to kerrang , a well known magazine which uses the similar conventions. Much like kerrang it uses a well known band on the front cover to attract its audience. However compared to kerrang it seems that NME is less formal with bold colours , rotated pictures and over lapping head lines. This shows that the audience its looking for is a wide range as it can appeal to many people. Nme also uses the conventions like personal pronouns to engage the audience , famous person on the background which makes people interested and sub titles which explain the titles . Its mast head is also on the top third of the page , this is a very similar magazine to kerrang.

Kerrang Double Page Spread

Once again i feel that kerrang use a informal way of presenting there articles, much like the contents page it has a nice balance of photographs and text , this is usefull as the audience can imagine what it was like to be at the concert. It is consistant through out the magazine , with text to photo, in this double page spread i also like the use of colour, through out these pages there is a theme of black and white , this relates to the band it self , My chemical romance it stays with there theme as a band. This band is known for the white and black colour scheme therefore the audience can relate to the magazine . The subtitle uses "We" which is a personal pronoun which engages the audience, i would use this in my magazine so my audience feel like we are talking to them .

Kerrang Contents page

Kerrangs contents page has a good balance between text and images , it seems uncoventional as the main pages has photographs next to them . Within that balance they have spilt the photos up, the largest one which takes up most of the page, this is one of there best articles in the magazine and promote as there best, they use a well known singer to be there centre of attention. They also have five other small picture which show other interesting page. as a photograph for every page is not possible there is a text box linking the magazine together and showing the reader which page has which article on.,This is conventional of a contents page.

I think that this type of contents page can be very effective at gaining the target audience attention.

Two week task - Kerrang

Kerrang is a well known magazine and is one the most popular magazines today . It has a mask head which is covered by the band, this shows that the magazine is already known to loads of people and that the target audience would already know about the magazine therefore they are not afriad to cover the mast head. The magazine also has many famous bands, it shows metallica and spinneretter and another band as its background. This is another convention as many magazines have famous people on the front to promote there magazine . The subtitles also have "Plus!"ethasised at the bottom , this is a superlative which attracts the audience, this is a regular convention of a magazine. The front cover also has subtitles explaining the contents so the viewer knows what is inside the magazine.
This magazine is niche , targeted at a specfic audience . This magazine has many conventions , i chose subtitles and text boxs to explain what the contents of the magazine is , the main subtitle is bold and in red and has personal pronoun, "you" which engages the audience and makes them feel you are directly talking to them .I also put a bar code and a date which are more conventions of a magazine .
In this magazine i also chose to keep the colour scheme of black and white , to keep the magazine looking professional . This magazine is unconventional because it has its main mast head at the bottom third of the page , "FR33D0M" usual magazine place the mast head in the top third to make there magazine stand out . Similary the magazine has a date and a bar code which is a convetion of a magazine.
This magazine is targeted at a niche audience , therefore it will only appeal to certain people . Similar to the other magazines it has a bar code, date and a mast head . However,  i chose to keep a colour scheme , white which make the background image stand out , red for the text to make it fit in with the magazine and black to make it scarey . I also used superlatives to express the subtitles , "exclusive"  , i also used bold text to show their is tickets to win, this will catch the readers eye and will make them want to bu y the magazine .

Codes and Coventions Task

This magazine is has codes and conventions , The most common convention is the mast head in the top third of the page , i done this so the reader can quickly see what the magazine is by only seeing the top of the magazine. If the magazine is being sold it usually has a bar code and the date these are two other conventions of a magazine . I also used alliteration in the main subtitle , "Top Ten tips" and "Perfect Picture" which is another convention of a magazine .

Front Cover Mock up

My front cover mock up is very simple but is the basis of the perliminary task. It has many conventions of a magazine, it has a MCU relevant to the magazine. The magazine target audience will be for sixth formers this is the reason behind the photo , it shows a average sixth former, i done this so other students could relate to the magazine . There is also a mast head in the left hand corner , this is where most mast heads are placed .On the left hand side there is the contents of the magazine which should tell the reader what is inside the magazine. In this i thought that the text boxes i used could have been improved , to improve the text box i could have used a colour border on word prossesor , i also could have used an effect to fade the border into the background.  However i thought that the mask heaqd would appeal to the audience, and the use of colour makes it stand out on the page.Lastly i thought that the photo appeals to the target audience as it is a sixth former , this means other six formers can appeal to the photo and recognise that it is a sixth form magazine.

Image Manipulation

In this task we had to manipulate a original photograph of a MCU . To do this we had photograph taken, and manipulated the photo in a word processor. Firstly i manipulated the colour of the photo , i chose a colour correction to make the photo brighter which made the MCU stand out. I also chose a fade which made the colours blend in which each other . Then i made a mast head , "sixth form" and then change the colours of the words to make it stand out .
